Engagement photos are usually the first professional photos a couple takes together as a couple — before the wedding, before the stress of a seating chart, before any of it. That makes them worth getting right, and it also makes the planning process feel a little overwhelming if you've never done anything like this before. Here's the order we'd suggest thinking about things in, based on what actually matters for how your photos turn out.
Start with a season, not a date
Before you pick a specific day, decide what season feels right. Fall gives you warm colour and dramatic light across the GTA's parks and ravines. Spring brings blossoms and fresh green. Summer means longer golden-hour windows in the evening. Winter can be striking if you're comfortable with cold and don't mind bundling up in your outfits. Once you know the season, picking an actual date and time gets much easier.
Pick a location that means something — or one that just looks incredible
Some couples want the park where they had their first date. Others want the most photogenic spot in the city, full stop, with no personal history attached — and that's just as valid. Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto each offer a completely different feel: leafy conservation areas, waterfront boardwalks, and dramatic downtown backdrops. Think about your outfits early, not the week before
Outfits take longer to sort out than people expect, especially if you want to coordinate colours without looking matchy-matchy. Give yourself a few weeks, not a few days. We've written a full guide to what to wear if you want a head start.
Decide what you actually want the photos for
Save-the-dates? Your wedding website? A big framed print for your parents? A guest book sign-in photo? Knowing the end use helps us plan for both portrait-orientation shots (great for save-the-dates) and wider landscape shots (great for websites and prints).
Book earlier than feels necessary
The best light and the nicest weather windows in the GTA get booked up, especially in September and October. If you have a date range in mind, reach out as soon as you can rather than waiting until it feels urgent.
