If you ask most photographers what their favourite season is to shoot, a lot of us will say fall — and it's not just personal preference. There are real, practical reasons autumn tends to produce some of the most striking engagement photos of the year in Ontario.
The colour does a lot of the work for you
Reds, oranges, and golds against a clear blue sky create a naturally rich, warm palette that most outfit colours pair well with. You don't need an elaborate backdrop when the trees themselves are doing that much visual work.
The light gets softer and lower in the sky
As the sun's angle drops through September and October, golden hour arrives earlier in the evening and the light itself becomes softer and warmer for a longer stretch of the day. That means more flexibility in scheduling your session without sacrificing beautiful light.
The temperature is actually comfortable
Summer heat can mean sweat, squinting, and rushing to get shots done before everyone's uncomfortable. Fall in the GTA is usually mild enough to be comfortable in layered outfits for a full session, without the harsh midday sun you'd deal with in July or August.
It photographs beautifully almost anywhere in the GTA
Heart Lake Conservation Area, High Park, Riverwood Conservancy — all of these lean into their tree cover, and fall is when that tree cover pays off the most. Even more urban spots like downtown Brampton or the Distillery District pick up warmer tones in the early evening light this time of year.
Book earlier than you think you need to
Because fall is genuinely the most requested season, the best weekends (and the best weather windows within them) fill up fast. If autumn is calling to you, it's worth reaching out well before September rather than waiting for "perfect" leaf colour, which is never fully predictable anyway.
