Rainy Day Engagement Session? Here's Why You Shouldn't Cancel

A rainy forecast the week of your session can feel like bad news — but in a lot of cases, it's genuinely not. Overcast and even light rain can work in your favour photographically, and there's more flexibility here than most couples expect.

Overcast skies are a photographer's secret weapon

Clouds act like a giant natural softbox, diffusing sunlight evenly and eliminating harsh shadows and squinting. Some of the most flattering, evenly-lit portraits happen on overcast days — no golden hour timing required, since the soft light lasts all day.

Light rain can add genuine atmosphere

A misty or lightly rainy setting, handled with the right umbrella and a bit of planning, can add a moody, cinematic quality to photos that a clear sunny day simply can't replicate. Some couples specifically request this look.

Practical rain-day gear

A clear or simple black umbrella (avoid busy patterns, for the same reason we suggest avoiding them in outfits) works well as both practical shelter and a nice visual prop. Waterproof or water-resistant shoes and a light rain jacket you can remove for shots are also worth having on hand just in case.

When we'd actually recommend rescheduling

Heavy, sustained downpour, thunderstorms, or genuinely unsafe conditions are a different story — safety and comfort come first, and we'll always be upfront if the forecast looks like that kind of day. Light rain or drizzle, though, is very often still shootable and sometimes even beautiful.

Our rain policy

We keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your date and will talk through options together if it's looking questionable — whether that's adjusting the timing, choosing a more sheltered location, or rescheduling if conditions genuinely aren't workable. You're never left guessing.

Don't let a cloudy forecast worry you

If your date is approaching and the forecast isn't looking sunny, reach out and we'll talk through the plan together rather than defaulting straight to cancelling.
