Engagement Photos vs. Save-the-Date Photos: What's the Difference?

These two terms get used almost interchangeably, and honestly, in most cases the confusion doesn't matter much — but there is a real distinction worth understanding, especially when it comes to timing and planning.

Engagement photos: the session itself

"Engagement photos" refers to the photography session as a whole — the shoot where a couple, recently engaged, has professional portraits taken together. This is the event: a specific date, a specific location, a specific photographer.

Save-the-dates: one use for those photos

"Save-the-date" refers to the announcement card or digital graphic sent to guests early in the wedding planning process, letting them know the date to reserve. Save-the-dates very commonly (though not always) feature a photo from the couple's engagement session — but the photos have plenty of other uses too.

Why the timing matters

If you're planning to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates, you'll want to schedule your session early enough in your wedding planning timeline to leave room for editing, photo selection, and card design/printing before you need to actually send them out — often 6 to 12 months before the wedding itself.

Other common uses for engagement photos

Beyond save-the-dates, couples commonly use their engagement gallery for their wedding website, social media announcements, a guest book sign-in display, printed decor at the wedding itself, or simply as standalone portraits to have and keep regardless of any wedding planning use at all.

Does this change how we shoot your session?

If you know you want save-the-date photos specifically, let us know in advance — we'll make sure to capture some portrait-orientation shots with open space for text, in addition to the wider landscape shots that work well for prints and websites.
